All Hands Ecology (formerly Audubon Canyon Ranch) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit land-based conservation organization founded in 1962 to protect sensitive wildlife habitat. Today we are guardians of a system of nature preserves spanning 5,000 acres across Marin and Sonoma counties. Through the integration of education, science, and stewardship, our 50+ staff work with communities and partners to ensure Northern California’s biodiversity endures through research, land stewardship, and mentorship for new generations of conservationists.

The Opportunity

All Hands Ecology is hiring two (2) Prescribed Fire Practitioners. The Prescribed Fire Practitioner plays a key role in advancing the mission of All Hands Ecology, a conservation organization stewarding over 5,000 acres of protected land. We work in close partnership with private landowners, government agencies, partner organizations, and the broader community to bring “good fire” back to the landscape. As part of the Fire Forward program, this work supports ecological health and community safety while contributing to the restoration of our relationship with the land and each other.

The Prescribed Fire Practitioner serves as part of a 12-person Prescribed Fire Module under the supervision of a Squad Lead and Module Lead. This role combines hands-on fieldwork, collaboration, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement land stewardship and fuels reduction projects
  • Support prescribed fire operations (“good fire”) on the ground
  • Assist with planning and preparation for burn operations
  • Serve as an instructor or support instructor in community courses and workshops
  • Collaborate closely with team members and regional partners.

What We’re Looking For

This role requires strong organization, adaptability, and a commitment to team-based fieldwork. Ideal candidates will bring:

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to land stewardship and ecological resilience
  • Enthusiasm for advancing prescribed fire practices in the San Francisco North Bay Area
  • Ability to work safely and effectively in physically demanding outdoor environments
  • Comfort working in a structured team setting under field leadership.
